Vellum Software vs Cambric
Write, format, preview, and produce every edition on Windows or Mac.

Cambric is the better purchase for authors who want the whole book-production workflow in one local desktop project. Write or import, organize the complete book, apply professional design systems, inspect real composed pages, control print and ebook editions, preflight, and export PDF, EPUB 3, or editable DOCX on Windows and Mac.

Why Cambric is the stronger long-term workflow
Formatting quality
Cambric combines professional design systems, live composed pages, and an editable book-aware manuscript. You can keep writing, correct the source, and regenerate every release format without rebuilding a handoff between separate writing and formatting projects.
Platform availability
Vellum is currently Mac-only and requires macOS 13 or newer. Cambric runs natively on Windows and Mac. That removes Apple-only hardware, remote-Mac services, and the operational friction of maintaining different production tools across computers.
Where the manuscript lives
A final formatter begins after another writing workflow ends. Cambric can start from a new manuscript or DOCX, then keep final revision beside the composed pages. The local project remains the source that regenerates the print PDF and EPUB when a typo, back-matter link, or series list changes.
Production authority
Cambric makes the local manuscript-and-interior project authoritative. Print PDF and EPUB are release artifacts regenerated from that source, so corrections do not reopen a separate drafting-to-finishing chain.

Make Cambric prove itself on your difficult pages
Cambric includes a 30-day money-back guarantee. Use that window to test the actual manuscript—not a gallery sample—and verify that the workflow removes the handoffs you are paying to escape.
Import the same DOCX
Use a copy containing italics, scene breaks, part pages, the longest chapter title, and representative front or back matter. Record what imports cleanly and what must be repaired before judging the design.
Match the production choices
Select the same trim, comparable body size, similar line spacing, and equivalent chapter-start behavior. A page-count comparison is meaningless when one version uses materially tighter typography.
Inspect the whole PDF
Check widows, short final lines, scene breaks at boundaries, running-head suppression, blank pages, folios, and the final page count. A formatter saves time only when the edge cases remain controlled after revision.
Test the EPUB separately
Resize text, use a narrow screen, inspect navigation, and test more than one reading environment. The print PDF and reflowable EPUB share content but should not be judged as if they are the same layout.
Migrating an existing title
Keep the currently published PDF and EPUB as reference artifacts, but rebuild from the editable source manuscript. Compare page by page, preserve intentional scene and chapter structure, and expect a new page count when typography changes. A new count means a new cover template and potentially a new cover file. Never overwrite the released edition until the replacement has been validated and proofed.
