Standard Windows and Mac document fonts (Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial) do not contain embedded print outlines for fleurons (❦) or asterisms (⁂)—so KDP Print Previewer replaces them with empty ☐ boxes unless they are composed inside a book typesetter.

He closed the brass clasp of the ledger and listened to the rain against the high windows of the customhouse. Below the quay, the last ferry to Murano was already pulling away from the pilings, its stern lantern swaying across the black water.
“We have until dawn,” Clara said, her voice barely above the sound of the tide. “If the tide turns before we reach the archive, the lower vaults will already be sealed.”
Three hours later, the fog had settled so thickly over the canal that the oarsmen navigated by the echo of the bells from San Michele.
Julian kept his hand inside his coat, fingers resting against the wax seal of the letter he had promised never to open.
In a 90,000-word novel, you have 45 to 80 scene breaks—and Word breaks them in three places:
- 1. Every paragraph after a scene break must be flush-left (0" indent): In Word, your Normal style applies a 0.25"–0.5" first-line indent to every paragraph after a scene break unless you manually assign a separate style 70 times.
- 2. Stranded scene breaks at the bottom of a page: When you edit a sentence in Chapter 2, your text reflows and pushes a
* * *divider to the very last line of page 118—leaving it orphaned from the scene it introduces. - 3. Kindle Dark Mode & unembedded glyph boxes: Pasted PNG ornaments turn into white boxes in Kindle Dark Mode, while decorative symbol fonts print as
☐☐☐on KDP when unembedded.
In Cambric on 64-bit Windows and Mac, scene breaks are a first-class book element—not a pasted character. Every paragraph after a break is automatically flush-left (or styled with small caps), page-boundary collisions are handled automatically on live typeset pages, and your ornaments export cleanly to both Print PDF and Kindle Dark Mode EPUB 3.
